All of New Zealand's state and state-integrated schools have a Board of Trustees (BOT). The BOT is responsible for the governance and strategic direction of school. It is accountable for ensuring that the school is run in the best interests of its students, staff and community.
The Principal is the Board’s chief executive and has complete discretion to manage the day-to-day administration of the school as they think fit, so long as it complies with the Board’s general policy decisions.
Who is on the Board of Trustees?
At Remuera Intermediate School, our Board is made up of:
- The Principal of the School
- One elected staff representative
- Five parent elected trustees
- Co-opted trustees (as needed)
Trustees are elected by the parent community and staff members. Elections for staff trustees are held every three years (next elections in 2022). Parent trustees are elected for a three year term however elections are held on a staggered basis with three trustees being re-elected every 18 months (next election for three parent trustees Nov 2020).
Board of Trustees' Meetings
The Board meets once a month between February and December, see School calendar for details. Meetings are open to the public, however they are not public meetings where everyone has the right to speak. Speaking rights can be granted in advance by the Board Chair. In some instances, parts of Board meetings are closed to the public when the Board is discussing confidential matters.
Getting Involved
Standing for the BOT is a great way to get involved in your child’s education. Training and support are available to assist with carrying out this responsibility. The New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA) website contains information for current or potential trustees www.nzsta.org.nz
