PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE

Over these past couple of weeks, we have had many reasons to celebrate the incredible successes of our young people. We have seen many students compete in Maths through the Mathex competition, STEM through the Epro8 evenings, Oratory skills during our speech competition, writing in the Auckland Writers Festival and over 150 students entering the ICAS competition. We have also seen fantastic achievements on the sports field with our boys Futsal team winning gold at AIMS Games and numerous other medals which we will share in detail in our next newsletter.

It is these moments when we learn what it means to dig deep and find the courage and determination to go further, faster and longer than our peers to come out on top. Whilst the world celebrates involvement and participation, there remains a place for excellence and we are proud of our young people who have shown this over recent weeks and months as they emerge from the fog of the past 2 ½ years.

We look forward to providing even more opportunities for all to put themselves forward and to shine.

INTERZONES BOYS NETBALL - YEAR 7

On the 30th of August, I was privileged enough to take our Year 7 boys netball team to compete in the Interzones netball competition. After winning Central Zones they were ready for the challenge of winning Interzones. They studied their competition and were raring to go but had a bye for their first round. The boys dominated their first game against Churchill Park winning 19-0. Their second game against Kelston gave the boys their first loss 11- 6. For their quarter-final game, we were up against St Heliers Primary school, the boys did not let the loss affect them; they went on to win 15-0.

Heading into the semi-finals the boys were nervous, it was definitely a nail-biting game and a hard loss of 14-4. With a little bit of music, the boy's positivity rose and they were ready to play off for 3rd and 4th. Mission Heights Jnr College definitely brought their A game, throughout the game, it was goal for goal. The boys managed to hold off the competition and take out the win 12-11. These boys' sense of sportsmanship throughout the day was outstanding. They should be extremely proud of themselves.

CYCLING NEWS

The SKODA Northern Tour

Over the weekend of 3rd & 4th September, 12 riders from the RI Cycling Club competed in the SKODA Northern Tour event.

This tour consists of three races; an Individual Time Trial (ITT) along Dunkirk Rd Panmure, a Hill Climb up Mt Wellington, and a Criterium (road race circuit).

Duncan Turnbull, our parent coordinator and manager of the Cycling Club reported the amazing performances and results in these three very different types of races which were extremely challenging. Some kids raced consistently, others hated hill climbs, others loved hill climbs, some hated racing on Saturdays while others hated racing on Sundays.

Congratulations to these riders who received medals and certificates
Cole Feringa - 2nd in U14 National ITT, National Hill Climb and Criterium. Cole’s General Classification result, 2nd.
Ava Donnelly - 3rd in U13 National ITT and National Hill Climb.
Thomas Still - 2nd in U13 Criterium.

Congratulations to all the riders for competing and finishing safely and to the parents and families for their encouragement and support.

NETBALL PRIZEGIVING

In week 6 we had the pleasure of celebrating the end of the netball season with our Tuesday after school netball teams. After the massive effects covid has had on sport it was fantastic to celebrate our girls first full netball season since 2019. Many deserving girls received awards for being the most dedicated player, most improved player, most valuable team member and of course most valuable player. The two top awards went to Masiva Ongoloka for being the best all-round Year 7 Netballer and Zoe Kalauta for being the best all-round Year 8 Netballer. This year is really a step forward back into normality. It is safe to say that everyone is looking forward to another great netball season next year.

MATHS WEEK

RI has celebrated our annual maths week! To kick it off, a number of brave teachers competed against some of our top student mathematicians in ‘Are you smarter than an RI mathlete?’ The teachers won supreme in both assemblies but it was a close challenge. Throughout the rest of the week students answered daily maths questions, created superb maths posters, hunted for a hidden jar of lollies and made hundreds of guesses as to how many it contained.

A highlight of maths week is always our high spirited year group mathex competitions. Each year, classes put forward a team of 4 problem solvers to compete against each other through a series of 20 tough math questions. For 30 minutes, the hall was a scene of cheering, sprinting and fierce mental calculations until a top team from each year group took out top place:

Year 7 - Room 13
Year 8 - Room 24

MATHEX 2022

On the evening of 25th August, the two Year 7 and two Year 8 Mathex teams competed in the Auckland Mathematics Mathex Competition.  After the 2021 competition was cancelled due to Lockdown, it was wonderful to see our teams have the opportunity to take part again. Over 120 competing teams were in each year group and it was great to see the excitement from the hundreds of competitors and their very vocal supporters.

Our Year 7 teams were up first and within the 30 minutes allowed, finished on 100 points and 95 points. A great effort from both teams.

The Year 8 teams were up next and I am proud to say that Team A finished in 3rd place, with Team B not far behind.

Of the over 60 schools taking part in the Year 8 competition, RI were one of only five schools to get both teams scoring 100 points within the 30 minutes. A fabulous effort!

MULTI MATERIALS UPDATE

UNIQUE IDEAS SHOWCASE

Sometimes we are able to support some more unusual ideas that students would like to create in Multi Materials. It takes a lot of extra effort and planning to bring these more specialised and complex ideas to life.
These are some examples of students who showed off their individual talents by making twisted wind sculptures (Amor), mini surfboards (Lucas), and a floating "pirate" themed carry tray (Juan).
Another unusual project completed this Specialist cycle was a folding trolley project (Orion). Wear a helmet!

PERFORMANCE MEDIA UPDATE

Here is a snapshot of the projects by Year 8 students from Cycle 2 Performance Media.

VISUAL ARTS UPDATE

Year 8’s have just completed their second art cycle. They created their own style floral still life art piece. Some of the mediums they used were, block printing, oil stick, tapa cloth, 3D collage pieces and stencil.

FOODS ROOM UPDATE

YEAR 8s MAKE MUFFINS

This week the new Y8 Foods students have been put to the test in their first lesson with a MasterChef-style challenge. Each team was required to make a batch of muffin tin doughnuts with time limits for reading the recipe, dividing up the jobs, collecting the ingredients, making the batter and getting them into the oven. The purpose of the challenge is to become familiar with the Foods room again, test teamwork and skill level, and have some fun!

40 HOUR FAMINE

My experience with the 40 hour famine was amazing, not only did it give me an opportunity to feel the struggle of the not so fortunate kids but also an amazing excuse to be with friends.

In the 21st century so many people associate devices with their everyday lifestyle. There are very few work environments that don’t have someone planted in an office, managing a screen all day. My friends and I took that information to use, we tried 40 hours without electronics. After, my dad even made a scene of duck-tapping the phones shut in a little ice cream container.

Being able to do the 40 hour famine is an amazing eye opening experience for me. I didn’t release how much I rely on my devices.. The thought of doing that 24/7 among other more life threatening struggles is unbelievable. I hope the money we have raised together as a school makes an impact.

REHU TAI SPEECH COMPETITION

On Tuesday 30th August RI hosted the Remuera Cluster finals for the Rehu Tai Festival of Language. We had over 20 students in Years 7 and 8 from 10 schools compete in 4 different speech categories. These were - Traditional speech, Flash Talk, Rap and Spoken Word Poetry. Remuera entered Lauren Chan (Room 4) and Ananya Rai (Room 24) into the traditional speech and spoken word categories and they represented our school exceptionally well. The judges had a tough job on their hands as there was a high level of skill from all of the students who competed.

The event was judged by Lucy Bristow who is head of English at Selwyn College and Liv Costello who teaches speech and drama lessons. If you're interested in getting your child into some speech and drama lessons, feel free to get in contact with Liv via her email [email protected]
