The Importance of Developing Personal Responsibility
One of the more common emails we receive generally starts something like this…Dear Mr/Mrs Teacher. Today my child has returned home without his/her jumper/lunchbox/jacket/basketball. This is the third jumper/lunchbox/jacket/basketball stolen this year…
At the end of every school day, we gather up numerous belongings from around the school that students have left behind. The vast majority of these items have no names and in the case of lunchboxes often still have most of the food in them.
This week, we have been stressing the need for our young people to take greater responsibility for their belongings and of the school in general. In addition to leaving personal belongings lying around, we have seen a significant increase in the amount of rubbish left behind.
This time in a young person's life is one of rapidly increasing personal responsibility. It is important that they get as much support as possible during this time. This is doubly important for our year 8’s as they start the transition to secondary school. In an effort to support them through this period of growth, we ask that you have a conversation with your young people about their role in being responsible for themselves, their belongings and their community.
Also, if you could please make sure uniforms and personal belongings are named, we can make sure they are reunited with their owners in the event they are separated from them.
It takes a village to help grow these young people, ideally a clean and rubbish-free village.

TRASH TO FASHION 2024
This year 22 wonderful garments were presented at our annual Trash to Fashion extravaganza. Mr Marsh and the DJ club played their original music throughout the evening. The night runs alongside the Art Week exhibition, so it is a really lovely way to celebrate the arts at RI.
RI teacher Yvonne Gallagher did a wonderful job of MC for the evening which was judged by another teacher, Sarah Choat, Sarah Stead and past parent at the school, Joanne Chaplow.
They spent several hours interviewing the contestants before the event and made their choice after seeing them again on stage. It was an extremely difficult choice, but below are the category winners who won prizes sponsored by the parent group.

KAPA HAKA GROUP VISITS REMUERA KINDERGARTEN
On Monday 29th July, the Kapa Haka group was invited to perform at Remuera Kindergarten as part of their Matariki celebrations. As we have such a large group, Year Seven students were selected to participate in this activity.
We also selected six Year 8 students to accompany us as leaders of the group.
After our performance, the kindergarten students sang a Matariki song back to us, which our students later joined.
Then it was time for some play, where both the Kapa Haka group and the kindergarten students were able to enjoy spending some time together.
STAFF VS STUDENTS FOOTBALL
In Term 3, the eagerly awaited staff vs. students soccer game took place on a muddy field, making for a challenging and hard-fought match. Both teams showcased excellent play, with each side adapting well to the tricky conditions.
The staff took the lead just after halftime, thanks to a goal from Mr. Stenning. The students fought back fiercely, but it was Miss Vulinovich who sealed the game with a stunning last-minute goal.
The event highlighted the competitive spirit and sportsmanship of all participants, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.
YEAR 7 ZOO TRIPS
A highlight for our Year 7 Students is our annual trip to the Auckland Zoo. Our syndicates headed out on what were mostly fine days, to check out a wide range of animals.
This trip formed part of our Term 2 Unit “From Surviving to Thriving” where we looked at different environments and adaptations of a range of living things. During the Education Sessions at the Zoo, we looked at animals such as elephants, baboons, flamingos and big cats and learned about the physical, physiological and structural adaptations that enable them to thrive.
The Zoo educators were very impressed with the RI students as they moved around the park respectfully and demonstrated that they had learned a great deal about how animals have evolved and adapted to specific geographical regions.
Thanks to the many parents who joined us and looked after our students. Having you there adds to the experience and we hope you enjoyed your day out too!!
CZ BOYS NETBALL
On the 29th of July, 1 Year 7 and 1 Year 8 boys teams travelled to Windmill netball courts to take part in the boy's CZ tournament. Both teams were excited for the day ahead and everyone was hoping the rain would hold off for the day. The Year 7s started the day off against Royal Oak.
Nervous about playing their first official game of netball, they settled into the game winning 18-5.
Their 2nd game was a friendly game against Kohia, winning 1-12, and the 3rd game against Ponsonby was always close, but the boys pushed themselves, giving them a winning score of 5-4.
The 4th game against Kōwhai was a nail-biter, finishing in a draw 7-7, and the 5th game against Waiheke was won 9-5. In the semi-finals, they faced Balmoral, which was no challenge for the boys winning, 13-2.
In the final, the boys went against Waikowhai, who had a large goal difference from those in their pool. The boys started the game with confidence and just continued to play as a team, winning the game 11-4, making them the winners for the day.
The Year 8s also seem to be placed in the tougher pool of the competition, which definitely showed throughout the day.
BALLROOM DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA
On Wednesday, July 3rd, the Year 8 Ballroom Dance Extravaganza took place. The event, hosted by Johnny Williams, was the culmination of five weeks of dance lessons where students learned the Cha Cha and Jive. Dressed in their best, the Year 8 students showcased their dance skills in competitions for both styles.
Emilia Hoglinger and Ray Chuang won the Cha Cha competition with their synchronized and energetic performance, while Nandhini Sireeswararajah and Ryan Anthony claimed victory in the Jive with their dynamic routine.
The event celebrated the students' hard work, talent, and love for dance, with special recognition given to the winners.

On Thursday 8th August, the team will be holding a fundraiser at the school during lunchtime. They will be selling delicious Krispy Kreme donuts.

Our children’s safety is of paramount importance to us. In order to ensure the safety of all our students, at 9:45 am if your child has not been marked as Present we will send out a text notification to alert you of his/her absence.
We are aware many parents are simply very busy people and forget to notify the school so please respond with a Y and a reason for the absence/lateness.
Respond with an N if you have dropped your child at school or know that he/she was coming to school and we can investigate this promptly.
Should your mobile number change, please notify the school immediately so that we can update our records accordingly.
